MEET THE EDITORS OF GLOBAL PULSE, 2008-09


Julio Bracero-Rodriguez, Ponce School of Medicine - Editor-in-Chief & Webmaster

Julio BraceroJulio Bracero is a medical student at Ponce School of Medicine, Puerto Rico. He plans to pursue a career in pediatrics and has an interest in primary care, human rights and women's health care issues. He has traveled extensively through El Salvador, most recently delivering medical supplies as part of his school's REMEDY project. Previously, he served as AMSA's National Primary Care Week co-coordinator for 2003 and 2004, as chapter president in his school for two years, and participated in AMSA's 2008 Community and Public Health Institute. Last year, in his capacity as editor, he was responsible for transitioning Global Pulse into the online journal that it is today. He joined Global Pulse in 2004.


Preeti Kaur Rajpal, University of Minnesota - Editor-in-Chief

Preeti Kaur RajpalPreeti Kaur Rajpal studies medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and is interested in health and human rights issues. Recently she worked on HIV issues in India, investigating healthcare worker discrimination. She joined Global Pulse in 2006.





Katherine Ellington, St. George's University - Editor

Katherine EllingtonKatherine Ellington is a medical student at St. George’s University, Grenada West Indies. Previously, her work focused on community development projects in New York City and throughout southern Africa. She has written review articles for the AMSA publication, The New Physician, most notably her reflections on surviving Hurricane Ivan. She has expertise in the field of women’s health and will purse a career in obstetrics and gynecology. She joined Global Pulse in 2008.



Tanvir Hussain, Baylor College of Medicine - Editor

Tanvir HussainAfter graduating summa cum laude from Rice University with a BA in both Sociology and Psychology, Tanvir pursued his MSc in Social Epidemiology at UCL & LSHTM as one of the youngest Fulbright Scholars to the U.K. He was honored as the first student to earn Distinction in his program. While in London, Tanvir served on the UK Commissioner's panel on Contemporary Muslim Issues alongside the UK Attorney General. As a medical student at Baylor College of Medicine, he is pursuing certification in Underserved Health Care as well as International Health. Recently, his research has focused on socioeconomic determinants of immigrant health in the U.S. and health disparity in countries undergoing rapid economic change. He is excited about his work abroad in Bangladesh and South Africa in the upcoming year. Tanvir joined Global Pulse in 2004, served as Editor-in-Chief in 2007-08, and is looking forward to a wonderful year under new leadership.


Fortune Meriwether, University of California - Editor

Fortune MeriwetherFortune is a first-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco. Before med school, she worked for two years as a teacher's assistant and researcher in Human Biology Program at Stanford University, coordinating courses on US and international health policy. She is active with the Clínica Martin Barro, a student run clinic that serves the Mission District in San Francisco, and is also a Health Equity Scholar through AMSA. Additionally, she is on the Student Advisory Group for the Global Health Education Consortium Conference to be held on April 2008 in California. She joined Global Pulse in 2008.


Kunal Mitra, Duke University - Editor

Kunal MitraKunal Mitra is a medical student at Duke University School of Medicine with an interest in pediatrics. Kunal has traveled to Kenya and South India where he participated in community health outreach programs and public health research. Ever since, he has developed an interest in the issue of infrastructure and workforce as it impacts health from the local to international levels. He joined Global Pulse in 2008.



Sujal Parikh, University of Michigan - Editor

Sujal ParikhSujal Parikh is a medical student at the University of Michigan. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in both Public Health and Neurobiology. Sujal has traveled extensively in India and East Africa and is interested in social justice, health and human rights, access to medicines, and HIV/AIDS issues in India and Uganda. He participated in AMSA's 2007 Global Health Leadership Institute, and currently serves as a trustee for the Uganda Village Project. He joined Global Pulse in 2008.


Cheruba Prabakar, University of Connecticut - Editor

Cheruba PrabakarCheruba Prabakar is a 3rd year medical student at the University of Connecticut. She is an avid globetrotter and has traveled to over 16 countries. She has done medical work in Kenya and India, the latter trip focusing on an independant research project on Somatization Disorders. Cheruba is interested in incorporating global health into her career as a future physician, no matter what field she chooses. She has been a member of AMSA for the past 3 years and has served as chapter president and Regional trustee. She joined Global Pulse in 2008.


Sural Shah, Penn State College of Medicine - Editor

Sural ShahSural Shah is a medical student at Penn State College of Medicine. Following graduation from college, Sural embarked on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study the impact of social policies and culture on the development of emergency medical systems in Switzerland, India, New Zealand and Brazil. In medical school, Sural continued examining health systems issues through research on the expansion of community health worker programs in Brazil and South Africa, and has investigated reproductive rights violations of internally displaced women in Nepal. She has been involved with AMSA's Global Health Scholars Program. Sural is currently a NIH/Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholar in Lima, Peru, through the University of Washington, where she is researching infectious diseases in pediatric populations and pursuing interests in global health education and human rights. She joined Global Pulse in 2008.


Tanyaporn Wansom, University of Michigan - Editor

Tanyaporn WansomTanyaporn Wansom is an MD/MPP dual degree candidate at the University of Michigan Medical School and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. After college, Tanyaporn spent a year in Bangkok as a Fulbright scholar engaged in HIV/AIDS counseling, clinical research, and advocacy with a focus on marginalized populations. During the summer of 2006, she was a Duke University Global Health Fellow researching compulsory licensing in developing countries at the World Health Organization's Department of Essential Medicines in Geneva. She returned to Thailand in 2006-2007 as a NIH/Fogarty Clinical Research Scholar and contributed to projects on quality of life among HIV+ patients receiving HAART and reproductive health care for women. Within AMSA, Tanyaporn has been elected to national leadership for three years and is currently serving as the 2007-2008 Global Health Action Committee Chair. She envisions a career combining global health policy with infectious diseases clinical research and practice. She joined Global Pulse in 2004.
